E3 the other Big Boy in Gaming

February 13, 2006

The two biggest US gaming conference in the video game industry are GDC and E3. E3 is closed to the public, which means you have to work for a gaming company or seller to even be eligable to attend. Due to the professional nature of this event it is where all companys announce important news about the future of gaming. Below is an article talking about this years upcoming conference. Since we are on the verge of a new generation of consoles this should be interesting. In the history of gaming we have never had three systems competing at the same time.

Warning Rant

Ignore at personal discretion

One of my hugest pep peeves currently is website validity. I just read this article which made me more upset at Microsoft than before. I am not linking to the actually releases from Microsoft because I assume not many are aware of the different technology incorporated in browser functionality

One of the reasons it is so important to make a browser adhere to the strict W3 standards is that screen readers are being developed to use standard coding. CSS was created mainly to make the web more accessible for the disabled.

Already many web architects create sites that only work in internet explorer (My husband’s online class uses a website that only works on Windows and Internet Explorer). This is a huge problem online, and one of the reasons I’m mad at Microsoft.

News just in from Normal, Illinois

Teens have been making science fiction reality. The best part is that they are just normal everyday kids who have been exposed to technology thier whole lives.

I can’t wait to see what they do in their 20’s :)

Gay Rights in Warcraft

February 10, 2006

Over the past week Blizzard has been facing some opposition from the GLBT community. It all began when a player began recruiting members for her guild. She was issued a warning, and told not to bring up a topic related to sensitive world issues. The player quickly responded by posting the events on the World of Warcraft forum, and news spread to video game blogs, a law firm, and then to the research community.

The issue has been resolved, but this has been a difficult time for all parties involved. This can remind us that it is important to fight for the rights of all of our patrons.

I love how blogs allow anyone to write for any reason. Its very empowering. When I was younger, the popular thing was writing fan-fics. My first forum was for Harry Potter. An author would write in installments, and fans would hang on the edge of their seats to hear the next paragraph or page. Now we have special pages for fan fic, and its normally submitted as a whole, not in installments. Its sad, because that is how I came to understand writers like Dickens.

Every interest I have has an online community. Board Game Geeks allows me to trade Board Games. Insiider not only offered card trades, but featured news, artwork, online game play, online role playing in MUD format, advertising space, and a place to chat about non magi nation topics.

I also created a Neo pet when it was still very small. I would spend hours feeding it, playing games, searching for the perfect item…. I returned in college when I manned the reference desk. It was just beginning to be commercialized. I loved the worlds, and the ability to access different places. I left when there was more commercial than content. Now my biggest non professional place is the Keenspot forums.

All my past online experience has helped me be comfortable in online classes, listservs, Google groups, and blogs. My husband and I also play many games which helps me stay comfortable with technology. I have always been able to pick something up and use it, using my teen years to program TV messages, make homemade remotes for classroom use, and finding hidden games on school computers. All without a computer at home.

I don’t mean to be rude but I don’t think teens would want or need a class about creating My Space. They could go for tips on the library webpage. If you read the OCLC’s report about Library Perceptions. Most teens are aware of the library’s website, but don’t use it because they find Google better. I think this is one of the biggest things we can do to appeal to “my” generation.

Self image A

February 2, 2006

I wanted to take a monument to explain my avatar.
I created an animated flash to represent the images I use to identify myself.

First I have my favorite webcomic-Dominic Deegan. I have been reading it for years, and become an active participant on the forums. I don’t really wear t-shirts but I have one from Mookie (the creator). Web comics are a part of my day. The first thing I do every morning is check the updates. (some nights I’ve stayed up until 3 am to catch it)

Second I have my name. In all definitions this is also a representation of me. When I publish, fill out a form, or introducing myself, I am representing who I am with random syllables and letters essentially. It is one of the conventions we accept in all cultures, some change to reflect the person while others are given with an ideal in mind(whether the memory of a loved one or story character, or a verb/noun that represents something wanted for the child)

Third is a picture of my husband and I. He has his arms around me in a loving embrace. The picture was taken at our anniversary. I am smiling (something I tend to do frequently).

Fourth is the word “is”. Such a powerful word. Is can link words together to describe poetically, hatefully, or simply. It can be anywhere, but it is the word that links all the other words of a sentence.

Eiseldora ! Next we have my gnome. Isn’t she cute? My husband drooled and waited for almost a year to get World of Warcraft, and guess what happens. I take it over after my finals on Christmas break to create a level 33 fire mage in about 17 days. I am an officer in the “Little League” Guild, and caretaker of noobs. My two best friends are Zwws a Chinese grad student from Canada, and Ihalfaman a Australian master’s student who programs computers. This may seem odd to people who don’t play but for me its a whole different world where I can meet people, work together to finish goals, and have fun. The lag is terrible, but I keep returning because I love what I can be there.

Salafy! Salafy is a Naroom Magi who specializes in regenerating creatures. She is excellent with baby furoks(another avatar I use often), eebits, and rabbage. She is from the 2i game Magi-Nation. A CCG that is now sold to a different company that is taking it in a different direction. The game was more than just collecting card and making decks. I was a member of a league when I was dating my husband. I made many friends, and was able to mentor a 12 year old girl. I would spend weeks building deck, and succeeded in getting a killer combination with Ninx and a Ritual Spear. My husband loved the story’s written about the cards, and the fan base who lived on insiider. Like Dominic Deegan I have a t-shirt with Salafy on the back.

Next I placed my username. The one I use most often is kittykat813. I have since I first used the internet. I love cats, and I wanted something unique and nice sounding. 813 stands for my birthday-August 13th. About a year and a half ago I started to do publish my professional work on the net. I was taking an independent study reading children’s literature which I abbreviated childlit and 2004 for the year. I liked it and the account I used so I’ve been childlit2004, childlit, and childlit513. The 513 stands for my anniversary May 13th.

Now you can see my adorable cat-Frisky. She has been with me since I was in 7th grade. She is very vocal, and precious. I used to write stories about her and to her. She is a great listener, and still loves to play. My whole life she has competed for my attention from books. Now she is content because my husband loves her as much as I do. (He is the only male she has ever even liked)

The smiley face represents many things to me. The eyes are the way my friend Tracy would write smilies. Smiles also represent instant messengers. I have been using ICQ for 8 years. I met a good friend who had the same username, school, and age as my husband. Smilies also represent for me happiness and joy, something I like to enjoy often.

Lastly we have a book. Books have helped me my entire life. When my mother was ill I escaped into books, when I was sad I would write books, when I went to 8th grade I found a profound joy in reading books, in college I found a joy in sharing books, now I enjoy listening to books while I play. I am a library science student, and love technology, but its books that I will always credit for helping me through my life.

This has been a rather lengthy divulge into the mind of a crazy person. I know most people don’t see deep into avatars, and there is no real reason to. Its just that for a whole generation we identify with these self made images that show the world who we are, what we care about and, what we want to do.

Games Learning and Society

February 2, 2006

The registration for GLS is now available. Sponsored by the university of Wisconsin-Madison and the Academic ADL Co-Lab. This conference will feature research in the area of video games. Last year presenters ranged from professional game designers, Student researchers, and professors from the University. This is the second year for this conference, which was a sell out last year. If you plan to go make sure you pre-register.

I am #5187-3240.

Hope to see you there

American Indian’s Boycott Gun

February 2, 2006

Gun, developed by Neversoft, is set in the old west. In an attempt to breathe life into the genre, designers have developed a game molded after the John Wayne model, stereotypes and all. The only problem with this, is that the model is flawed. The stereotypes the game embodies represent “whiteman’s” perspective on the Native Americans without the ever important discussion of the Native Americans point of view. This has upset the Association for American Indian Development.

In an effort to protest the negative response caused by these images, they have organized a boycott. I admire their efforts, but it seems the real issue is a miscommunication caused the image. This is where libraries come in. We can place displays of Native American accounts and “Cowboy” narratives on display to foster the sharing of accurate knowledge.

The American Indian’s boycotting this will inevitably draw more attention to the game, probably causing its sales to go up instead of decline. As an American citizen I believe in the rights of everyone, and freedom from “Derogatory , Harmful and Inaccurate Depictions”. As a relation to an Indian tribe I am concerned with the stereotypes of Native Americans in “Westerns.” Just as concerned as African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans are with the stereotypes of their heritage.

This boycott may do little to change Gun, but it will start to change the Game Design World. Already talks have been held about the role art and marketing plays in reinforcing conventions of the past.
